Safe and Fun in the Sun: Essential Safety Protocols for Boating with Your Dog in the Summer

Summer is the perfect time to take your furry friend out on a boat adventure. But before you set sail, it's important to take safety precautions to ensure your dog stays safe and comfortable in the hot sun. In this blog, we'll explore safety protocols for taking your dog out on a boat during a hot summer day.
  1. Life Jackets Just like humans, dogs should always wear life jackets while on a boat. Make sure the life jacket fits your dog properly, and that it's designed for their weight and size. A life jacket can help keep your dog safe in case of an accident or if they accidentally fall overboard.
  2. Water and Shade Dogs can easily become dehydrated in hot weather, especially when on a boat. Always bring plenty of water and a water dish for your furry friend, and make sure they have access to shade. Bring a canopy or umbrella to create a shaded spot for your dog to relax in, or find a spot under the boat's bimini top.
  3. Potty Breaks Dogs need regular potty breaks, even on a boat. Bring a portable dog potty or training pads for your furry friend to use. Be sure to dispose of waste properly and bring plastic bags to clean up any messes.
  4. Sun Protection Dogs can get sunburned, just like humans. Apply dog-specific sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to any exposed areas, such as the nose, ears, and belly. Keep in mind that some sunscreens are toxic to dogs, so make sure to choose a product that is safe for your furry friend.
  5. Boat Safety Make sure your boat is safe for your dog by removing any potential hazards, such as loose wires or sharp edges. Teach your dog to stay away from the boat's motor, and never let them ride on the bow or swim platform while the boat is in motion.
  6. First Aid Kit Always have a first aid kit on board in case of an emergency. The kit should include basic supplies, such as bandages, gauze, antiseptic, and a thermometer. Additionally, pack any medication your dog may need, such as anti-nausea medication or allergy medication.
In conclusion, taking your furry friend out on a boat during a hot summer day can be a fun adventure, but it's important to take safety precautions. Make sure your dog wears a life jacket, has access to shade and water, and is protected from the sun's harmful rays. Always have a first aid kit on board in case of an emergency, and remove any potential hazards from the boat. With these safety protocols in place, you and your furry friend can enjoy a safe and fun day on the water.

BOATING
There are a few important things to keep in mind when taking your dog on a boat.
  1. Shade
  2. Water
  3. Life vest
If you’re out on the water and your dog becomes overheated, it’s a long ride back to shore. Even if your dog is an incredible swimmer, you want them to wear a life vest. If you become incapacitated, you want your dog to be able to float around safely until someone rescues both of you.
Use caution when considering exposing your dog to conditions such as heat. They experience things the way we do. Just because we’re comfortable, it doesn’t mean that they’re comfortable too.
As much as you want to share your time on the water with your pets, it is generally not a good idea to  bring them.
